Category: Let's talk
Okay, this came up in a public descution. It would seem that around here, a few topics get everyone all fired up. So, in order to help some of the newer people, and to..well get debate going here, wich subjects are the ones to avoid?
Religion
the palastinien/israeli conflict
bush/blair and iraq
muslim extremism muslims in general are best avoided.
Al Qaeda/Osama Bin Laden
And most of all make no mention what so ever of friends of mine
I'm joking by the way.
I say anything with heavy volumes of drama. You get it everywhere, and there is a time and a place for it. But there are times that people over do it on any web board. So if you hate drama posts where people get moody or snippity to just ignore it.
Better yet; let the new person find for themselves which areas are comfortable for them to go in and read/post.
Are you talking about board posts or quicknotes? I think there is a board topic category for just about everything here on the boards, and people should feel free to start a topic on any subject because people who don't like to discuss certain subjects can just stay away from those boards. But on public qn's, the subjects that seem to get people riled up are religion, politics, and sex. Some people love to flirt openly and use lots of sexual innuendos on public qn's, and this seems to offend some people. Serious debates about religion seem to tick people off. It really depends on who is logged on at the time. Sometimes anything goes, and other times you get whiners who ask that the subject be changed, in which case everyone tells them to turn off public qn's or put people on ignore.
I think any subject would be good to discuss but the important thing is how to discuss it. It seams as some people don't like disagreement and sometimes can't back up what they say. When somebody disagrees with somebody and the other person hasn't got anything to say their only thing to say is don't read the topick instead of trying to back up their oppinion.
So bottom line is that is not the subject that matters but the way to discuss the subject.
It was actually qn's we were talking about. I think that the boards are a different story altogether.
As long as it's within the rules, there should be no topic not discussed. We are mostly adults here, and can choose whether or not we read, most of us hopefully know how to quickly jump from note to note, post to post, and so can easily avoid reading particular subjects even in qn. You only need see the first line of a note often to know if it's one to skip or not. and if it really offends you, either turn off qn, or ignore the person doing the discussing.
I don't know about qns because I'm an abstainer.
However, whatever you do on the boards don't ever ever mention cookies or cookie makers.
Bob
Well, I can certainly say that some of the subjects on quicknotes have made public qn's unejoyable or uncomfortable for me, and not a nice place tobe, but if I'm not in the discussion, I know i have no right to ask or insist that the subject be changedc just because I find it distasteful. However, I've never been able to understand why, if peole want to fight or bad mouth each other, I've never understood why they don't just do it in private qns. I use to turn public qn's on once in a while if Iknew a nice person who had them on for a while or had them on, because there are some people wouldn't have them on if the conversation was vulgar, but it seems whenever i have public qn's on, people are usually name calling and bashing each other or someone else. it's hard to avoid the meanies unless you put all their qn's on ignore, which i've come to the conclusion that if you are someone like me, it's either put everyone on ignore if you have public qn's on, or keep public qn's off altogether. At least with the boards, it's easier to avoid the meanies and the grouches just by skipping over a topic.

Bob, rofl!
Seriously, I agree with Nikos and Kevin. As long as it's within the rules, go for it.
Well, this is exactly why I wanted to do this, so people can read comments like all these and judge for themselves.
